How many girls live at the House of Charis?
Currently, there are forty-nine girls living in the house.
How many roommates does each girl have?
The majority of girls have other three roommates. There are four girls to a two-room suite, one room is for studying and socializing, and the other room is for sleeping. There are two rooms with six girls, two rooms with two girls and one room with three girls.
How much is rent per month?
Currently rent is $515.00 per month for a ten-month contract (September - June)
What is provided by the house from the rent one pays?
-Sleeping room-Study room-All utilities (electricity, garbage, internet, cable, water, laundry)-Meals -Breakfast food is provided every weekday (i.e. cereal, granola bars, yogurt) -Lunch is prepared for us by our cook Monday thru Friday -Dinner is prepared for us by our cook Monday thru ThursdaySince the House of Charis is owned and operated by Calvary Chapel Church of Corvallis, is it mandatory for the members to attend church there on Sundays, or are they able to attend another Christian Church in the area?
It is not mandatory for House of Charis members to attend Calvary Chapel on Sundays. They are, however, required to attend a Christian Church on Sundays.
Are there weekly house meetings that the House of Charis members are required to attend?
There are mandatory Monday night meetings every week which includes dinner from 5:30-8
Are the House of Charis members required to do any chores?
Each Charis member will have three chores assigned at te beginning of each term. Chores are assigned in order of seniority throughout the house. Also every weekend three girls are assigned to do chores over the weekend.
How does the house handle any food allergies or special dietary needs that members might have?
Our cook is great about working with members to prepare meals that they can eat without worry. If this is an area that you need to have addressed while living at the house, we will have you talk to our cook before the beginning of the school year to insure that we will have menu items suitable to your needs.
What are the rules about alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and weapons on the House of Charis property?
Absolutely none of these things are to be possessed by House of Charis members or their guests on the house property at any time.
Are there telephones in the girls' rooms?
No, there are not individual phones in the girls' rooms. There is a main phone line available for all members to use at any time. Local calls are free of charge, and long distance calls may be made when using a prepaid phone card.
Are there "quiet hours?"
During the week before finals and the week of finals, quiet hours apply all day, except from 5-7 in the evenings
Are there any time restrictions for when male visitors can be in the house?
Males are welcome on the main floor and in the basement from 8:00 a.m. until midnight on weekdays, and until 2:00 a.m. on the weekends.
Are there any areas of the house for females only?
Yes, the second and third floors of the house are for females only. This allows for a more relaxed and less distracted study and sleep area.
Are males allowed upstairs for move-in days, move-out days, and house tours?
Yes, men are allowed upstairs for move-in days, move-out days, and house tours when it is okayed by a House of Charis Manager. This insures the girls' privacy as well as allows dads, brothers, etc. to help our girls move in and out with as much ease as possible.
What furniture is provided by the house for the members?
-Wardrobe/closet area. The dimensions vary, but the average size of the wardrobe is 45.5" tall by 22.5" wide by 24" deep. With three drawers that are 5", 7",and 7" deep-Desk. The tabletop average is 25" deep and 49" wide. It is 29.5" tall. The desk has three drawers and comes with a removable slide-out writing surface.-Bed. Each girl gets either a top or bottom bunk. These beds are standard twin, but the mattresses are deep enough that extra long sheets will fit as well. The space under the beds is 10" tall
Is there room for me to bring any furniture?
As each room differs in size, it is suggested to start out the year with the basics and work up from there, if you and your roommates would like to. Members are, however, encouraged to bring storage containers (i.e. three-drawered plastic containers, thinner plastic bins to fit under the beds (10" tall), etc.) when moving in, as often times girls need more storage space than is provided by the house to accomodate all of their belongings.
Is Internet provided by the house?
Yes, we provide wireless Internet for all house members.
Are there any items that members cannot have in their rooms?
-Extension cords (power strips are okay)-Nails, strong adhesives to the walls (tacks, sticky tack and tape are okay)-Burning candles (candle warmers are allowed only if you turn them off when you leave the room)
Are there any electronic items (i.e. lamps, clocks, etc.) provided by the house?
Besides overhead lighting, members will need to furnish their own additional lighting sources, alarm clocks, stereos, computers, etc.
Is there stereo, television, DVD, VHS, and/or exercise equipment at the house?
Yes, we have a big screen TV, DVD and VHS players. There is no exercise equipment, but OSU does have a work out facility that is free to use for students.
Can I have my own television, VCR, and/or DVD player in my room?
Yes, however, we suggest that you double check with your roommates to make sure there is space and that you don't accidentally double up on certain items.
Are friends and family allowed to stay overnight at the house? Are there places for them to sleep?
Yes, female friends and family are welcome to spend the night at Charis for up to two nights in a row per guest. If there is a need for your guest to stay longer than two nights, please discuss it with managers. There are no designated sleeping areas for guests. The best way to insure a bed for your guest is to check with your roommates about dates they will be away from the house and ask them if you or your guest may borrow her bed for the night.
If I become a member at Charis, who will my roommates be?
Once you have signed your contract for the next school year, you will be sent a "Roommate Questionnaire" to fill out about yourself. Questions include: -How outgoing do your consider yourself? -What type of music do your listen to? -How clean is your room usually kept?
We will then use these questions to put you in a room that would best fit you.
Are pets allowed?
Fish are the only pets allowed at Charis. Smaller fishbowls are recommended.
Where do Charis members do their laundry?
The laundry room is located on the second floor in the house. Members are welcome to use the facilities (two washers, two dryers, one ironing board, and one drying rack) twenty-four hours per day. Members sign-up for two hour time slots in which to use the washers and dryers, and you can use up to 4 hours per week. The sign-up board is located in the laundry room and is erased weekly to accomodate to changing schedules. There is storage space in the laundry room for girls' individual soap, etc.
Are there places to keep your toiletries in the bathroom?
Yes, each girl will be assigned a drawer (approximately 3.5" tall, 12" wide, and 15.5" deep) at the time of check-in on move-in day. Your drawer will be located on the floor where your bedroom is.
Where do I keep my showering toiletries?
There are racks in the bathrooms for storing your shower toiletries. It is recommended that you buy a plastic shower caddy (with holes in the sides and bottoms so that water can drain out) for you to keep your toiletries in.
Are there any places where I can store my personal food?
Yes, there is a refrigerator on the second floor in the laundry room where personal food may be kept. There are also two shelves in the pantry hallway located next to the kitchen that are designated storage areas for personal dry goods.
Should I bring my formal/semi formal attire for any reason? Where can I keep it?
Yes, Charis holds or attends between two to four semiformal/formal events during the school year. You will want your dresses, shoes, and jewelry at the house to choose from. There is a small room (closet) located on the third floor of Charis where members are welcome to store their semiformal/formal attire. Each girl is allowed two feet of hanging space.
